The Urban Retro Playlist

Even as we are approaching the new year I think we should think back and just give God thanks for all we have. I've taken some time to reflect on all the things that have been happening in my life, But then I saw this and thought how lucky I really am. I am very Grateful to God for all he has done, you should be too.

The song of the day is On To The Next One by Jay-Z featuring Swizz Beats from his twelfth studio album The Blueprint 3(2009). It was a very urban progressive hip-hop song. Knowing Jay-Z he always has something important to him he has to say. Notably when He said "...haters really gon be mad bout my next deal..." he was most likely talking about his deal with Samsung and the Magna Carta album, what a deal that was. In the song he was pretty much going on about stuff he was going to do and what he had been able to achieve The song eventually went on to win a Grammy.

The song of the is by American songwriter John Legend featuring Andre 3000 from his 2008 album Evolver. The song was a little out of Legends regular soul style with a more edgy R&B electro kind of vibe. Well the song was typically about trying to pick girls up at a bar and just you know spitting the lines and just ending up with the girl and having some fun. Andre seemed to be having a lot of fun reading the tone from his verse. The was major vocal work done by both John and Andre and the work was worth it because the chorus was just sublime. Its just one of those tracks you hear and just want to sing along.

The song of the day is Numb/Encore a mash-up between Jay-Z and Linkin Park's Songs from the MTV mash up show in 2004. For Jay-Z it was an avenue to reflect on his career, about the things he was able to do. Linkin Park's Verses however talks about how people are never satisfied with what you've done, how you just aren't good enough and how you just cant make every body happy.It was very popular when I was younger, it was in like video games and stuff. Eventually the song won a Grammy in 2006. They enjoyed the the collaboration so much they did an E.P. I consider the song a classic and if you haven't heard it I strongly recommend you listen to it.

The song of the day is Turn Up by Olamide from his album Baddest guy Ever Liveth (2013). Someone has been demanding for this song so here it is. It is an upbeat song, I guess it is supposed to be a happy song for people to shake their head and bodies to and just feel good. The way he started his verses with the "Hello, How are you?" was hella cool. The video has been showing on several TV stations severally and even consecutively. I think it one perfect for the season.

The song of the day is Over My Dead Body by Drake from his 2011 album Take Care. This song is one that just just makes you think if you really listen and try to understand what he is trying to say. I think the song was made just to reflect on the time that had passed and how he had made use of his time and resources. I guess he was trying to also clear the doubts of all the people that thought his  buzz had faded and if you listen to the album he did a good job. This was a very good album but the only problem I had with it is that he did not rap as much as I expected him to. This album also made me fully recognise Kendrick on the track Marvin's Room - Buried Alive. The song has a very slow and calm vibe and Drake used this track as an opportunity to clear some issues or just clear his mind at the time.

I've Noticed That there have been too many  Bendtner trolls and most of them don't even make complete sense.

The song of the day is Burn by British singer Ellie Goulding from her 2013 album Halcyon Days. The song was written by Ryan Tedder, Goulding, Greg Kurstin, Noel Zancanella and Brent Kutzle. The song is very catchy, with this pop upbeat vibe. The song Burn was originally written for Leona Lewis for her third studio album but it was eventually omitted then later picked up by Ellie Goulding. It pretty much talks about becoming a star and shining. It is a very commercially successful song and it top several charts all over the world. I really like how her vocals were on the song, her voice is just divine.

The song of the day is High by Eva off her GIGO E.P (2012). Its very unorthodox compared to most Nigerian song the style and tempo. Its a slow song with this very cool instrumental. It talks about the low points in life the struggles and how people would try to bring you down and how should just make an effort to rise above it all. When I hear songs like this I have hope that Nigerian music will eventually become different and more meaningful than it is now. If you haven't heard it before I recommend  you listen to it.

I don't know what we did to Fifa but why is it that at the end of the last 4 world cup draws we have managed to end up with Argentina. Really what did we do?

The E.P I'm going to talk about today is Sail out by singer, song writer Jhene Aiko released in November 2013. She is one of my favourite singers, she has this sweet voice and she is mostly on Hip Hop tracks with a slow soft pop kind of vibe. The E.P consists of 7 song featuring people like Childish Gambino, Kendrick Lamar and a few others. Well I had been hearing her on a couple of songs before Sail Out came out so I guess you can say I was looking forward to its release. When I finally Listened to it I really liked it. I was keenly looking forward to the song with Kendrick, Stay Ready (What A Life) and as a sure boy he dint disappoint. Another song I really like is 3:16AM. Here is her personal descption of the song:
“ i was born on March 16th . 3:16 is a popular bible verse that i believe in… but on the contrary… 3am is a dark hour… strong urges to want to leap off a building… this song is about real life depression, addiction, destructive love and suicide…  ” The remaining tracks on it are also quite nice.

While doing some research I came across this list by Mike G Da Rap Head for rocimages, wow after reading the explanation for why the people were on this list I was able to see the point he was trying to make. I must say the writer went HARDDD on each an every individual on the list especially Yung Six. The guy did not take it easy with any one of them even people from The Rap List Part 1 were on it. The song of the day is How to save a life by one of my favourite Rock bands The Fray from their début album How To Save A Life(2007) .It talks about a person who lost a friend and staying up all night to learn how to save a life amongst other things. It is one of the most digitally successful rock songs going over 3X platinum. The song has been used in several T.V shows but I heard it from One Tree Hill those guys knew how to select music for their show. Its just too relaxing the vocals on the song are very nice and cool. They are more alternative like if you ask me. I think the song  got nominated for a Grammy.

The song of the day is Radioactive by Indie rock band Imagine Dragons from their début album Night Visions originally from their E.P Continued Silence (2012). I heard it from one of my friends then I like it and I began to listen to it frequently. The song is very cool and it would be very good for karaoke I guess. The song was very commercially successful with very good critical acclaim. The song received two Grammy nominations for Record of the Year and Best Rock Performance. Lyrically they were talking about an apocalypse and the a revolution. Its a very nice song and i would recommend you listen to it if you haven't heard it before.

There are too many spicy E.P.L games to look forward to.

The song of the day is From Time by Drake featuring Jhene Aiko from the album Nothing was the same (2013) produced by 40. The song is  in  a way "Fruity" but I like it anyway. Drake talks about an ex mostly in his verses (he has too many sha). The song was very well crafted and the fast rising star Jhene Aiko killed the chorus. Gosh I love her voice she has been in a number of song recently like Sparks will fly by J.Cole, Beware by Big Sean and some other ones. The song From time is one of my favourites from the album probably because it relaxes me and it is just such a cool tune. I recommend that you listen to it if you have not heard it before.

The song of the day is Jonzing World by D'Prince Featuring Wiz Kid and Jesse Jags from the his 2010 album Omoba. Well just heard the song from a playlist I have for old song and I was like "whattt!" it is a very chilling song the artists on it were just having fun on the track I guess. At the time the song came out it was very big and you would here here the song every where you went.

The song of the day is Old School Love by Lupe Fiasco featuring Ed Sheeran. It is Lupe Fiasco's first single off his upcoming album Tetsuo & Youth announced earlier in the year. Its a very calm song. I value Lupe's  collaboration choices they are usually quite unique. In the song he is talking about a previous time and the lyrics are in a way related to Kanye West also The track also features a piano riff from Kanye West’s Family Business. The depth of Lupe Fiasco verses on the song,that's a level I would like to reach and the chorus was beautifully rendered by Ed Sheeran.

Just realized this and it is so true.

The song of the day is The A Team by British singer Ed Sheeran from the album + (2011). The song was Co-written by  Jesse McCartney, Aileen Marie Quinn, Ryan Tedder. I just developed this sudden affinity for Ed Sheeran after a friend of mine played  a different version of the song "Little Lady" featuring Mikill Pane. That version was very sad and deep it talk about child trafficking if I can call it that, but its not just what they talked about it was how they talked about. Its like a soul song just too calming .
What surprised me was that Mikill Pane is a black guy. There are several covers of the song and it got nominated for a Grammy. I recommend you listen to the song its very nice.

I was feeling down for a while then I thought "if I'm sad what is the true meaning of happiness?" I happy to say I have found it. The meaning I mean...

The song of the is Thank You by The Choc Boys from the album Everybody Loves Ice Prince(2011). Well this was from a few years ago,it had the whole Choc Boyz collaboration thing I talked about a while back. Their collaboration makes me very happy because they just bring something new to the table. But sadly it looks like they may not be collaborating any time so seeing the recent string of events. I think the point of the song was to thank his(Ice Prince) fans and every one that supported the song. This song was motivated to thank all  the people that read my blog. I apologize for the lack of posts I've been having exams for the past week and I will be having more in the weeks to come.

The song of the day is Stronger by Kanye West from his Second Album Graduation (2007). The song contains a vocal sample of "Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger" by French house duo Daft Punk. This is one of his best and most successful projects,It went 5x Platinum. It has this electronica-infused hip-hop vibe like this. I don't even know how he thought of such a concept, its just brilliant.It won a Grammy Award for Best Rap Solo Performance at the 50th Grammy Awards. I like the song because he produced it himself and he was able to fuse several concepts together and not make it sound disorganised.

The song of the the day is Only Me by 2-Face from the album unstoppable(2010). It was talking mostly about how the environment around him was about how there was peace and unity through a joint community,but now it has been wrecked by greed and secret societies. As it talk about how he would live if it was only him in control. I guess he was trying to express his feelings about the situation around him. Its actually a very cool song and he pass across the message properly with the song.

Today Is  "El Grand Classico", the most anticipated match of the season. For the past 3 days it is all I've been hearing about hopefully they wont disappoint.

The song of the day is Dr Carter By Lil' Wayne produced by Swiss Beats from one of my best rap albums of all time Tha Carter III(2008). Damn I remember this album though it sold over one million copies in its first week, It broke so many records and stuff. The song is about a doctor that fixes his patients with his words. Though his first two patients din't make it,he saved the last one. His flow and lyrics blew my mind on this track this was when Lil' Wayne was still "Lil' Wayne" (now he's just Wayne). It is a very different concept is why I like it a lot.

So as we all know, Kendrick Lamar seems to have taken a rage pill of recent, like.....we know how hardcore Kendrick is and all but lately he has gone all out and H.A.M without regard to any other rappers in the game declaring his supremacy constantly. He murdered the T.D.E cypher for the 2013 BET awards.......no surprise but WOW! It was something else, a must watch for all Kendrick and rap fans, watch it HERE

The song of the day is International by Jesse Jagz from The Jagz Nation Vol 1 (2013)album. Through out the album I think he was just trying to make music not just for his fans but for himself and he was talking about where he was at that point in his life. The beat of the song was very original and he spoke with this freedom.Also I like the effects on the song it wasn't really a mad rap song though it was more r&b oriented. But it is a jam for days one of my favorites from the album.

The song of the day is Day 'n' Night by Kid Kudi from the album Man on the Moon: The End of Day(2008). Damn when I heard this song immediately I loved it and I began to like Kid Kudi immediately, he has that whole loner stoner thing and it fits him too well. But sadly his hype died down and he left g.o.o.d music. After this time he still had some nice music but this was like his debut single and the whole sound was different from what was out at the time and I think that was what made me like it so much. Also there is another version of the same song but it has more of a house like sound but its also very cool too that's the Kid Kudi Vs Crookers version. It ranked as number 8 of the complex.com best songs of the decade. The Kid Kudi Vs Crookers version was very popular in europe.

The song of the day is Hallelujah by J.Swiss and Nonso from the Music In Session E.P(2013). This is my best song from the E.P, its is an upbeat gospel song. Its been a while since I played a song from the E.P but when I played it today I remembered why I like the song so much. It talks about the love of God, Dancing and giving him thanks.Also the producer did a nice job with the mix and the beat. I recommend you listen to the song.

The song of the day is The Man Who Never Lied by Maroon 5 written majorly by lead singer Adam Levine from the album over exposed 2012. This track is like my best one out of this album, the Adam guy is just a song killer. The vocals on the song were too cool. There were a lot of other good songs on the  but this one just had something I liked. It had this rock, pop like vibe but it was also not too loud and the instruments were well put together.

The song of the day is Body Count by Justin Timberlake from the album The 20/20 Experience part 1 (2012). It was most likely produced by Timbaland that guy is a beast when producing I don't understand how you can be so good at producing. It has the classic Timberlake & Timbaland Collaboration sound. It is very upbeat, and the instruments used were put together very well. The song isn't as famous as the hit singles from the album but its still a jam. The vocals are good(you have to expect that from JT), But my favourite part was the end when the beat changed to the drums.

Today I'm gonna talk about one of my favorite albums from 2011, Watch The Throne by Jay-Z and Kanye West. Oh I remember this album too well I can even say I heard it too much even. They went too hard on the album with the producers they had like Swiss Beats, Don Jazzy , Kanye West himself and a host of others. They featured very few people and no rapper at all (guess they don't went anybody to steal their shine). With amazing songs like Otis, H.A.M , Made in America, Ni**as in Paris and many more. Frank Ocean featured on two song and I must say he did well. The beats were very nice and different from the sounds that were produced at the time. It received very positive reviews and it went platinum in about a month after selling over 400,000 copies in its first week. The album is still a very chilling album and I consider it a classic. In my opinion it is better than both their 2013 albums. But I feel they should have gotten more collaborations other that the album is a work of art.

The song of the day is Lost by Coldplay off the Album Death and All His Friends/Prospekts March(2008). There is a version that featured Jay-Z but the first one I heard had just them on it.It has their regular Alternative Rock sound and a steady build up. The song talks about the betrayals,lows points in life and rising above the situations and people that are trying to bring you down. Its very inspiring so far you get the message its pointing out. I like the whole guitar effect ant the part for the guitar solos.The vocals are calm and soothing , I get boosted a lot after hearing the song.It reminds me that not every thing will just come easy that you have to put in the effort and even when your loosing al hope is not completely lost.
